October 17, 2009, 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Location: Sean T. Connaughton Community Plaza

Thank you to everyone who came out to the event!

Despite the dismal weather, the Prince William SPCA hosted the 4th Annual Pet Adopt-A-Thon and Expo on Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the Sean T. Connaughton Community Plaza. Pet adoption booths were on hand to show their pets. One very lucky dog from the Prince William County Animal Shelter named Kaiya went home with a new family and numerous adoption contracts were written for other pets from the various rescues. We were bracing for the worst but were pleasantly surprised at the turn out. The dogs didn’t seem to mind the weather at all. They enjoyed the agility course, off-leash play area and the dog walk. Kids, bundled from head to toe, were in the same spirit doing craft projects, painting pumpkins and having their face painted. Families stopped by our souvenir photo booth and 40 pets received rabies vaccinations and microchips at our low-cost clinic. Our volunteers and those from the local rescue groups need to be commended for their dedication to getting homeless pets adopted. While we all would have preferred to be inside someplace warm, it helped to remember that our efforts were making the lives of homeless pets better, which made it all worthwhile. The event raised $2,200 to support spay/neuter efforts and received more than 600 pounds of dog and cat food to stock the Prince William SPCA’s pet food pantry in Manassas.

The Prince William SPCA recommends adopting a pet from a local shelter or rescue group and discourages families from buying a pet from a pet store, newspaper ad or breeder. Thousands of healthy adoptable pets are euthanized at local shelters because there are not enough homes for all of them. By adopting and spaying/neutering pets, the community can stop pet overpopulation.

The dogs enjoyed the agility course, off-leash play area, contests and dog cookie decorating. we'll have contests and activities especially for them. Our fall photo booth was popular with families stopping by for a complimentary photo of the soggy yet fun day. For the kids, there were lots of crafts and games. Bundled in warm clothing, they painted a pumpkin, made sand art necklaces, got a temporary tattoos and had their faces painted.
