PWC Animal Control Seizes 77 Pets: Needs donations to care for and house animals
On August 4th, the PWC Animal Control Bureau served a warrant and seized 77 dogs and cats from "Janet's Rescues and Placements" in Dale City. The Prince William County Animal Shelter is estimating that the cost to house these pets will be $20,000. The PWSPCA is partnering with the county to accept donations from the public. Funds raised will be given to the county to care for, feed, house and provide medical assistance to these animals. How we are helping: The PWSPCA has donated $1,400 in "Revolution for Cats" (flea medication) and will continue to assist the shelter with other needs as they arise in regards to these animals. Thank you for your support.

Food/Other donations: The following brands of food are needed: "Venus Feline Life Advantage", "Fromm Family Puppy", "Solid Gold Wee Bits". Also needed, "Revolution" for cats. Donations can be taken to the PWC Shelter during regular business hours. The PWC Shelter's address is: 14807 Bristow Road, Manassas, VA 20112.

New Summer Youth Program Offers Kids Animal-Friendly Projects
If you or your children are looking for a fun way to help animals this summer, you will want to take part in the summer youth program. Kids of all ages can participate in any or all of the 5 projects that aim at helping animals. For a flyer on the program, click here. The program runs through Labor Day and prizes will be awarded!

PWSPCA Holds Ornament Contest!
Each November, the PWSPCA sponsors a pet adoption tree program to help homeless shelter pets. Volunteers are needed to begin making the hundreds of ornaments that are placed on trees and wreaths around the community. A contest will run from July 15th through October 15th. The person or group that cuts the most ornaments out will win a pizza party in November. For patterns or complete packets of ornament supplies, please send an e-mail to: pwspca@pwspca.org. Be sure to include your name, address and group affiliation, if any.

Animal Advisory Committee Update
The PW Board of County Supervisors has appointed the 13-member committee that will serve to improve companion animals in our community. Next meeting is Tuesday, August 24th at 6:30 PM, in the Powells Creek A/B in the McCoart Building. The public may attend.

Attention Volunteers!
The Prince William SPCA is updating its database and is asking all volunteers to fill out the new form even if you recently filled it out.  We ask all current volunteers and board members to fill out the form as well.  Only volunteers who fill out this form specifying their areas of interest will receive information on volunteer opportunities. No hard copies of the registration form are being accepted.

Prince William SPCA: Serving Greater Prince William County, Virginia
The Prince William SPCA was established to benefit the animals of the greater Prince William County, Virginia, area. This all-volunteer organization is dedicated to protecting domestic animals from cruelty, neglect, and abandonment, and stopping the unnecessary overpopulation of companion animals. Our goal is to end the killing of adoptable cats and dogs in Prince William County by promoting and supporting programs involving mutually beneficial relations between people and companion animals.

We encourage partnerships with the veterinary industry, the local business community, county government officials and other nonprofits that share in our mission. In working with these groups, we hope to make the greater Prince William region a better place for precious companion animals. Looking for answers to specific questions? Before contacting the PWSPCA, please note that we cannot assist in certain situations dealing with animals. They are as follows:

~ Animal Give-ups: We don't have a facility and cannot accept pets you need to give up for adoption. Please contact rescue groups if you must give away your pet after exhausting all options.

~ Animal Cruelty: To report an act of animal cruelty, you must contact Animal Control directly at:

~ Wildlife: Our volunteers are not trained in dealing with snakes, skunks and other wildlife that may be at your home. You must contact Animal Control for assistance with wildlife at the above numbers or call Humane Wildlife Solutions at 1-866-9HUMANE. This information is provided as a resource and is not an endorsement.

~ Injured wild animals? Call Wildlife Rescue League (703) 440-0800 if you have sick or injured wildlife you believe is in need of human assistance. One of their volunteers will return your call and give you instructions on how to proceed. Their hotline operates from 8 AM to 9 PM (6 PM in winter) every day of the year. If you call after hours, your call will be returned after 8 AM the following day.

~ Lost Pets: We have no means to handle inquires regarding lost or found pets. Please visit the local shelters to locate lost pets or to report a found pet.

~ Feral Cats: If you or your community have problems with feral cats, please contact Alley Cats for help. The can provide information on trapping and possible spay/neuter options. Prince William SPCA volunteers do not trap feral cats, but county animal control officers will (but please be advised that the cats may be euthanized if they are deemed unadoptable as many feral cats are).

In Memory Of Susie Caskey
The Prince William SPCA mourns the loss of Susie Caskey, Chief Animal Control Officer and Shelter Administrator for the City of Manassas. She passed away on December 31, 2007 at the age of 37. Susie served on the Prince William SPCA board of directors and was a true champion for companion animals. She was the recipient of the first PWSPCA "Humane Hero Award" (with her in this photo). She is missed dearly by her friends at the PWSPCA.
