Neuter Commuter
Pets spayed and neutered with this program as of 2/21/2012 = 1,274
The Prince William SPCA’s Neuter Commuter offers convenient, low-cost spay/neuter options in Prince William County. The Neuter Commuter travels to Prince William County once a month to pick up approximately 30-70 cats and dogs. It then travels to the Shenandoah Valley Spay/Neuter Clinic where the pets are spayed or neutered. Pets return back the next day and are picked up by their families. Fees for the procedures range from $25 to $65 inclusive. Other low-cost services, such as rabies vaccinations, are also be offered at the time of registration. There is no income requirement so anyone can participate, but space is limited. Full instructions and details are provided on the application form, which is only accepted on-line. People without Internet access are encouraged to visit any of the local libraries where computers with free Internet are available. Payment is made in advance and there are no refunds for cancellations or no-shows since the Prince William SPCA is responsible for payment of all reservations.

New Crate Policy
The PWSPCA will no longer rent crates as of November 21, 2011. We simply do not have the facility or the staff to adequately clean and prepare the crates each month. We will offer dog owners the ability to buy crates. However, because of safety reasons, we will not offer crates to cat owners. All cats must be in secure, plastic, size-appropriate crates BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME to avoid the potential risk of losing your cat.
If you do not have a plastic crate, you now have several options:
- Borrow a plastic crate from a friend, neighbor or family member.
- Buy a crate from Wal-Mart (www.walmart.com) or Petco (www.pwtco.com).
- Dog owners only: Buy a crate from the PWSPCA (rates are from $10 – $50).
All pets (cats AND dogs) regardless of their size must be in hard-sided plastic crates or they will not be transported!
Inclement Weather
In lieu of bad weather, the Spay/Neuter clinic will be closed if Harrisonburg City Schools are closed. However, the clinic will be open if school is delayed. The safety of the animals and people are of utmost concern to the clinic and the PWSPCA. If you are scheduled on a Neuter Commuter and bad weather is expected, please watch your e-mail for important information and details about what is planned. We will also update our Facebook page instantly when we learn about a canceled transport date.
No Rescheduling / No Refunds
Payment is made in advance and there are no refunds or reschedules for cancellations or no-shows since the Prince William SPCA is responsible for payment of all reservations. If you miss your appointment, you cannot reschedule it for another day.
Disclosure
The PWSPCA Neuter Commuter is a program that transports pets to a high volume, low cost clinic. It should be noted that there are risks involved with spaying and neutering and increased risks associated with transporting pets before and after surgery. While anyone is eligible for the program, it is designed to help those people in the community who cannot afford the procedure locally. Please read all the information carefully before signing up to determine if this program is right for you and your family.
